Challenge Attracts Students Nationwide

So you want to be The Next Great Innovator? Fantastic! Across the country, hundreds of talented students share the same ambition.

Now that registration for the RBC Next Great Innovator Challenge has officially closed, we can tell you something about your fellow competitors. More on that in a minute.

First, I want to thank everybody that registered for the competition. An initiative like this will succeed only if embraced wholeheartedly by all of its participants. By inviting student input on an issue of critical importance, RBC has set the stage. However, it's up to you to seize the opportunity and create the real innovation. To succeed, you'll have to muster all your creative energy, insight and knowledge. Together with your teammates, you'll need to investigate and analyze the issue at hand, develop some potential solutions, and present a convincing final proposal. It won't be easy, but it should be fun and you're bound to learn a lot along the way. To the victors go the spoils - a chance to present their ideas to RBC executives, and of course some cash.

I also want to welcome everybody to the Innovator Blog, which will serve as your inside source for ongoing challenge information. Like most blogs, the content here will be frequent and fluid. All of it will be supplied with one purpose in mind - to provide you with the advice, guidance and inspiration you need to maximize the impact of your final submission. Besides delving more deeply into the challenge question itself, blog posts will include tips and thoughts on teen trends and innovation. These are subjects of great interest to me, both personally, and professionally in my role as Program Manager of Applied Innovation at RBC. I'm happy to share my thoughts with you over the course of the challenge.

Now, to some stats you might be interested in. So far, we've been delighted by the response to the Next Great Innovator Challenge. At time of writing (with 8 hours remaining before the registration deadline) here are the key figures:

# of registered teams: 207
# of registered students: 710

Last-minute registrations should push the totals even higher. Colleges and universities in all regions of the country are represented, which should make for some excellent suggestions. More analysis of registered participants will follow, once we've had a chance to crunch the numbers.

Stay tuned for future posts, which will begin dissecting the challenge question!

UPDATE: At conclusion of the registration period, here are the final figures:

# of registered teams: 269
# of registered students: 927
# of participating schools: 45
